Upon Vila – Alcochete’s New Refuge

Just minutes from Lisbon, Alcochete holds a rare charm, where the village’s tranquil rhythm meets the serene grandeur of the Tagus. It was here that we discovered Upon Vila, the latest property of the StayUpon Hospitality Group—a contemporary refuge that combines minimalist lines, welcoming comfort, and an intimate atmosphere that invites you to disconnect from everyday life.

From the moment you arrive, it’s clear the hotel was designed as a natural extension of the village: every space breathes tranquility. From the spacious, light-filled rooms to the sun-drenched balconies with river views, there’s a calming presence that encourages slowing down and simply embracing the moment.

If the rooms provide the perfect sense of rest, the heated pool brings a livelier vibe, ideal for celebrating the lingering warm days. The Terraço da Vila Rooftop Bar, located on the top floor, is the perfect spot to embrace the sweeping views over the Tagus and Lisbon—whether at a laid-back late afternoon or during the already renowned Weekend Pool & Brunch, which brings together guests and visitors in a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere. We opted for a cheese platter and cocktails, but the menu caters to all tastes, including vegan options.

The experience, however, goes far beyond the hotel walls. With the support of the local tourist office, we joined a guided tour and set off to explore Alcochete’s historic center: wandering through narrow streets, whitewashed houses, centuries-old churches, and river-rooted stories, the village reveals itself as a place that preserves authenticity without losing vitality. Tales of a past tied to the Tagus and Ribatejo traditions abound, local shops welcome visitors, and greetings are exchanged with every passerby. Alcochete’s people still keep alive a sense of community from another time, and around every corner, we discovered a new perspective of the village.

After a stroll through the village, we headed to Restaurante Alfoz (https://restaurantealfoz.pt), located just across from the hotel. For over 30 years, it has been a benchmark of local gastronomy, where seafood and fresh fish reign supreme, accompanied by privileged views over the Tagus. Highlights include the Garlic Shrimp, John Dory Fillets with River Rice, delicious fried Whitebait with tomato rice, and the famous Chocolate Cake with vanilla ice cream—a flawless combination.

Back at Upon Vila, night falls softly and warmly. The pool reflects the last lights of the day, and the feeling is one of fulfillment—not just of a stay, but of an experience. This is the promise of the StayUpon Hospitality Group: to offer singular experiences in exclusive, strategically located properties, always marked by the seal of Portuguese hospitality.

At Upon Vila, Alcochete is not just a destination—it’s a state of mind.
