In recent years, the riverside area of Vila Nova de Gaia has undergone a profound urban transformation, establishing itself as one of the most dynamic cultural and tourist hubs in Northern Portugal. What was once a predominantly industrial zone, dedicated to Port wine storage, is now a vibrant corridor of leisure, fine dining, and luxury wine tourism. The latest example of this transformation is the brand-new Tivoli Kopke Porto Gaia, a hotel born from the renovation of the centuries-old cellars of Casa Kopke — the oldest Port wine house, founded in 1638. Simply arriving at the Tivoli Kopke Porto Gaia is an experience in itself: the hotel rises from a terraced platform of approximately 20,000 m², offering panoramic views over the city of Porto, the Douro River, and the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge. Space, comfort, design, and hospitality complete a perfect equation of taste and elegance.
Stay
With 150 rooms — including 10 suites and 4 with 100 m² — spread across three distinct zones named after Port wine styles (Vintage, Tawny, and White), the hotel’s interior design blends industrial touches with contemporary aesthetics. One immediately notices the vast art collection that adorns the walls throughout the property, featuring renowned national and international artists — a visual attraction that captivated us instantly and will remain memorable. Wine is a constant theme here. Some corridors offer direct views of barrels inside the still-operational wine cellars. We stayed in this wing and couldn’t resist visiting the caves — an experience worth repeating. Our room, with an unobstructed view of Porto, offered all the comfort associated with the Tivoli brand: generous space, impeccable design, and a calming atmosphere that instantly quiets the hustle of daily life — not to mention the panoramic balcony that charms from the first glance.

Gastronomy
The entire culinary concept is curated by Spanish chef Nacho Manzano (three Michelin stars at Casa Marcial). At the 1638 Restaurant & Wine Bar, the tasting menu changes every two months, with highlights including top-quality ingredients, both from land and sea, paired with wines from Quinta de São Luiz. The restaurant boasts sweeping views of the Douro River, and the service is swift, professional, and highly attentive. The Boavista Terrace is perfect from breakfast to dinner — we especially recommend the phenomenal Arroz de Galo(Rooster Rice). It’s also a great spot for a light meal and a glass of wine in a laid-back, welcoming setting.
The Cherry on Top: The Spa
The Tivoli Spa spans around 450 m² and features five treatment rooms (including a couple’s room), a sauna, Turkish bath, an indoor pool with chromotherapy, and an outdoor pool with sweeping views of the Douro. The spa offers exclusive and deeply sensory wellness experiences, such as Alchemy Night*. Here, wine is not just an inspiration — it’s an active presence in the treatments, rituals, and ambiance.
From vinotherapy treatments and massages inspired by the vineyard’s seasonal cycles to moments of river-view contemplation, every detail celebrates the land, the passage of time, and the human touch. With top-tier professionals in the wellness sector, the spa is a must-visit — whether you’re a hotel guest or not.
Alchemy Night by Tivoli Spa Kopke: In a serene setting, where deep, resonant sounds flow through the body, releasing tension, balancing energy, and quieting the mind, this is a unique and transformative night. Tibetan singing bowls and gongs create an immersive sound therapy concert, re-harmonizing body and mind against the backdrop of the Douro’s finest view. A true deep pause in the midst of life’s routine, featuring a welcome drink, finger food, and a few surprises. The session is guided by renowned therapist Nuno Cunha.

Sustainable and Cultural Footprint
Sustainability is embedded throughout the hotel’s operations — from efficient water management and the use of local, seasonal products to architectural choices where nothing was left to chance. The hotel also boasts a vast private art collection featuring works by Vhils, Joana Vasconcelos, Picasso, Dalí, and Miró (via the Abanca Foundation and the Escotet family) — another highlight of the Tivoli Kopke experience. More than just a hotel, Tivoli Kopke Porto Gaia is a new landmark on Gaia’s riverside — a premium wine tourism destination, a cultural and design center, a culinary hotspot, and a wellness haven that you simply must visit… and revisit!
