Retage Travel – Cairo’s Signature Tours

Retage Travel is a customized tour company based in Cairo, founded by Mr. Amr Azzam, the Managing Director. Under his leadership, the company has grown with a strong commitment to quality and innovation. In addition, the Luxury Travel and Exclusive Tours segment was established by Ossama Mohamed, who brings his expertise and vision to this specialized area, offering clients bespoke travel experiences with a personal touch. During our visit to Cairo, we spoke with Ossama Mohamed, who shared with us the vision behind the company’s signature tours and why they are so important in the city’s luxury travel market.

What sets Retage Travel’s customized tours apart from the traditional offerings available in Cairo?

Passion is what sets us apart. Growing up surrounded by such a rich culture and diverse civilizations, and studying these subjects in depth during our academic lives, planted the seeds of our passion for Egyptian history and archaeology. As we transitioned into our professional lives, we gained valuable experience working in luxury hotels, learning the high standards of hospitality and the importance of delivering an exceptional customer experience. We also learned by observing the tourism industry around the world and how it shapes the overall visitor experience.

What is the process of creating a tailored itinerary for clients? What factors do you take into consideration?

It’s very easy — we love to create a hassle-free journey for our guests. First, we arrange a virtual call with the client to understand their interests and expectations. The most important aspects we consider include:

  • Timings: arrival and departure date
  • Historical interests: the specific era they’re interested in (Pharaonic, Islamic, Christian, Modern)
  • Destinations: a mix of coastal, historical, or wellness retreats
  • Transportation preference
  • Group size: number of adults and children
  • Cuisine preferences: to tailor restaurant choices and menus
  • Experience preferences: such as camel and horse rides by the pyramids, or private dinners on boats
  • Medical considerations: choosing the best weather for their needs and accessibility (e.g., the ability to enter pyramids)
  • Topics of interest: themes they would like our local experts to discuss with them

What are some lesser-known places or experiences that you recommend for those looking to get off the beaten tourist track?

First, I recommend the Ibn Tulun Mosque, constructed by Ahmed Ibn Tulun and distinguished by its spiral minaret. It is the only surviving monument from the Tulunid era. Ahmed Ibn Tulun, originally a Turkic slave-soldier, was sent to Egypt as governor by the Abbasid Caliph in 868 AD. He later declared independence and established the Tulunid dynasty, which ruled Egypt and Syria until 905 AD. Next is the Gayer-Anderson Museum, an art museum attached to the Ibn Tulun Mosque. Gayer Anderson was a British officer who lived in the house between 1935 and 1942. Originally built in 1631 during the Mamluk period, the house was restored by Anderson and decorated with his personal art and antique collection. Each room was furnished with a unique theme, and much of the original furniture remains intact to this day — a remarkable preservation of 90-year-old interiors.

How does Retage Travel ensure an authentic and culturally rich experience for visitors?

We believe it’s essential to work with local guides who have an archaeological background, as they provide genuine insights into the sites and their history. We also organize private tours to avoid crowds and maintain an intimate and authentic atmosphere. Our itineraries often include alternative routes that highlight original traditions and educate travelers on cultural etiquette, such as dress codes and local customs. We apply the same approach to culinary experiences, partnering with respectful local restaurants to ensure authenticity. Finally, we consistently seek feedback from our clients to improve our services and encourage them to share their personal experiences. We are always eager to welcome visitors to Cairo!
