Quinta Jardins do Lago – Timeless Elegance

Luxury at Jardins do Lago is not about being impressed, it’s about being deeply at ease. The hotel is known for its serene and intimate setting, away from the hustle of central Funchal but still conveniently located.

The ambience at Quinta Jardins do Lago is one of serene, timeless elegance, a blend of colonial charm, botanical beauty, and calm sophistication that sets the tone for deep relaxation. The 18th-century manor is just simply stunning, true Manor House elegance: antique furnishings, polished wood, soft lighting, and fresh flowers: all the flowers and plants displayed in the hotel are lovingly collected from the hotel’ s garden.

The historic manor house blends old-world elegance with modern comforts. With only around 40 rooms, there’s a strong sense of privacy and calm. The estate is wrapped in lush gardens – we loved simply getting lost in these spectacular gardens. Excellent for enthusiasts of flower and bird photography. Over 2.5 hectares of immaculately maintained gardens with over 500 plant species, truly a  paradise for nature lovers. We were introduced to Colombo, the 67 year old  tortoise, a beloved resident of the gardens and a charming mascot with his own “ suite” as he loves going to bed early!

The nursery at Quinta Jardins do Lago is a quiet cornerstone of the estate, a place where the hotel’s deep commitment to nature and sustainability takes root, quite literally. Nestled within the gardens, it’s where rare plants, trees, and herbs are carefully nurtured before being introduced to the broader landscape. This behind-the-scenes space is not flashy, but it’s essential. It supports the hotel’s lush biodiversity, helps preserve Madeira’s botanical heritage, and allows for an organic, self-sustaining approach to gardening. Herbs grown here often appear subtly in the hotel’s cuisine, and guests with a keen eye may spot saplings destined to become part of the next generation of the garden. For those interested in horticulture, a quiet visit to the nursery – often available by request – reveals the thoughtful, hands-on care that gives Jardins do Lago its soul.

I was totally aware that at this special hotel it is understated luxury at its best: never flashy or loud, but quietly cultivated, lovely and serene. Named after General Beresford, the Beresford Restaurant reflects the manor’s historical elegance with soft lighting, classical music, and crisp linens. We enjoyed fine dining with a focus on Madeiran and International cuisine and impeccable service: a lovely experience and a dinner experience to remember.

Breakfast served on the veranda of the restaurant or in a beautiful setting in the garden below was equally enjoyable and so special with fabulous homemade marmalade and a great choice from the breakfast menu served at the table. I particularly loved being immersed in the greenery of the gardens and the sounds that accompany this tranquil setting. This surely is an award winning setting.

The bedrooms at Quinta Jardins do Lago reflect the hotel’s signature blend of comfort, elegance, and heritage, offering a refined yet deeply relaxing space that feels more like a well-appointed guest room in a private manor than a typical hotel suite. Decor is classic and understated, with soft colors, antique-style furnishings, terraces that open up to the lovely ambient outside. My room was spacious and flooded with natural light, with large windows that open to the terrace – wonderful bed! Sitting on the balcony at sunrise or sunset, with birdsong in the background, was one of the simple luxuries which I enjoyed so much. Thick walls and intelligent design ensure total peace and privacy — no street noise, no crowds.

With only around 40 rooms on a spacious estate, you often feel like you have the place to yourself. Fresh fruit, Madeiran wine, and a handwritten welcome note greeted me upon arrival. The historical Rooms in the manor house feature unique architectural details and an authentic 18th-century atmosphere. Staying in one of these rooms feels like inhabiting a world of calm, surrounded by natural beauty and discreet luxury. They’re not designed to impress, they’re designed to help you exhale.

The pool area at Quinta Jardins do Lago is a hidden jewel – elegant, peaceful, and enveloped by botanical beauty. It’s not just a place to swim, but a sanctuary for relaxation that mirrors the hotel’s overall atmosphere of calm refinement and yes, the pool is heated all year round. Exceptional service on all levels: friendly, welcoming staff that is always such an important component of a unique hotel like this. When it was time to leave I was deeply touched by a lovely small flower bouquet presented to me. An amazing property with such unique qualities.
