Originally built in 1844 as a private family manor, Quinta da Bela Vista is one of Madeira’s most cherished properties. Transformed into a five-star hotel while preserving its soul, it offers a refined and authentic experience, rooted in tradition. Long before it welcomed travelers from around the world, Quinta da Bela Vista was a cherished private estate, nestled above Funchal. Built by one of Madeira’s distinguished families, the manor was designed as a retreat – gracious, tranquil, and surrounded by the island’s natural beauty.
For generations, the house remained a private sanctuary, with its amazing gardens and elegant interiors echoing the refined tastes of its owners. In the late 20th century, the estate was lovingly restored and transformed into a luxury hotel by the same family, who ensured every detail – from the antique furnishings to the original architectural flourishes – remained intact.

The result is more than a hotel. It’s a living piece of Madeiran history, where heritage is not only preserved but shared—graciously, quietly, and with the utmost care. But what truly sets the experience apart is the extraordinary attention to detail and heartfelt hospitality. This is not a hotel that is overwhelmed with grandeur—it whispers.
More than just a place to stay, Quinta da Bela Vista is a sanctuary of timeless refinement. Quieter, deeper, and undeniably beautiful, it offers an unforgettable taste of Madeira’s enduring magic. Here I experienced quiet luxury, at Quinta da Bela Vista, luxury is not loud, it’s thoughtful.
The gardens tell a story of their own—spanning five acres of lush, curated landscapes that echo Madeira’s famed flora. Walk among dragon trees, camellias, orchids and flowering vines, with panoramic views of Funchal peeking between the leaves. It’s a living sanctuary that guests describe as “meditative,” “enchanted,” and “a world of its own.” This lush landscape isn’t just decoration—it is the soul of the hotel, infusing it with a quiet magic that soothes and inspires.
Inside, the hotel maintains its sense of timeless grace. The 19th-century manor house is rich in character, with antique furnishings, period artwork, and polished woodwork that speak to generations of care and tradition. It is in this Manor House that the exclusive, fine dining restaurant is situated as well as a few luxury suites. The original manor house sets the stage for an unforgettable fine dining experience at Quinta da Bela Vista Manor House Restaurant. Rich with 19th-century charm—wood-paneled walls, paintings, and antique chandeliers—this elegant space evokes the feeling of an intimate private club, where every dinner is an occasion.
The cuisine blends Madeiran tradition with international sophistication, drawing on seasonal ingredients and locally sourced seafood and produce. The menu celebrates Madeira’s culinary traditions, paired with international sophistication. Signature dishes include grilled scabbardfish with focaccia and almond crumbs and Madeira wine, braised beef tenderloin with island herbs, and passion fruit souflé, crème brûlée with Madeira wine—each crafted with the freshest regional ingredients and plated with quiet artistry. The wine cellar showcases Portuguese and international selections, with knowledgeable staff offering thoughtful pairings. The setting, the service, the silence between courses—it all contributes to a dining atmosphere that is both refined and deeply personal. I have found the dining experience to be a memorable experience with an atmosphere that is truly unique and elegant. We also had a lovely menu of the day in the main restaurant in the hotel: I had Pear Rocha & Chevré cheese in brick leaves and my Sole fish fillet with Meuniere sauce was divine.

I enjoyed my bedroom at Quinta da Bela Vista which reflects the hotel’s timeless elegance and quiet luxury, offering guests a deeply comfortable retreat imbued with character and charm. Many rooms overlook the hotel’s lush botanical gardens or the shimmering bay of Funchal, offering sunrise views and the gentle sounds of nature. Suites offer more space and refined touches, such as separate sitting areas and panoramic terraces. The ambiance is calm, peaceful atmosphere and the upkeep is meticulous, where every detail, from fresh flowers to turndown service, is handled with discreet perfection.
I enjoyed the balcony looking over the gardens and the constant sound of the birdlife. Quinta da Bela Vista offers an extraordinary chapter in the story of Madeira. Here, history, nature, and culinary artistry intertwine to create a world where every moment is meant to be savoured. When it was time to depart you felt you cannot wait to return.
