Quinta Casa Branca: Legacy Rooted in Nature and Heritage

Originally established in the mid-19th century, Quinta da Casa Branca originated as a private estate owned by a prominent Madeiran family. We recently visited this gem of a hotel in the heart of Funchal, where there’s a place that was never meant to be a hotel. It was built to be a home, a peaceful escape hidden among banana trees and exotic gardens.

In the 1990s, the current generation envisioned a new life for the estate: a place where guests could experience the beauty of this location. In 1998, Quinta da Casa Branca opened as a luxury boutique hotel, combining the grace of the original manor with contemporary design, warm service, and a commitment to quiet sophistication. Still family-owned and managed, the hotel today is a living tribute to its heritage, where history, hospitality, and nature are in perfect balance.

The modern wing was added with respect, not ambition, glass and stone nestled under the canopy, never stealing the spotlight from the gardens. The manor remained, timeless and gracious, welcoming guests with antique wood and quiet hospitality. Each guest becomes part of the story. Not just a visitor but a keeper of a place that still feels private, personal, and quietly serene.

The hotel doesn’t tell its story loudly. It lets you feel it. The gardens is a true botanical sanctuary spread over nearly 28,000 square meters. Home to towering century-old trees, exotic palms, cycads, and flowering plants from Africa, Asia, and the Americas. The gardens were started by the family in the 19th century and expanded thoughtfully with every generation. You are filled with wonder as you stroll through the gardens on your way to have breakfast.

Cuisine at Quinta da Casa Branca is a reflection of its setting – refined yet rooted, elegant but never ostentatious. Dining here is not just a meal; it’s a quiet celebration of Madeira’s land, sea, and seasons, expressed through two distinctive culinary experiences. Housed in the estate’s 19th-century manor, is the hotel’s signature fine dining restaurant, where timeless elegance meets contemporary gastronomy. Wine List: Thoughtfully curated, with a strong focus on Portuguese and Madeiran wines, including rare vintages of Madeira wine served as aperitif or as a dessert wine. When in Madeira you have to sample their famous Madeira wine!

Then there is the Garden Pavilion where we enjoyed a lovely relaxed dinner having delightful conversations with fellow guests and made new friends. What a lovely experience and memories were made. Service is invisible but always available, attentive without intrusion and we had beautiful interaction with the staff. Quinta da Casa Branca doesn’t try to impress.  Its signature kind of luxury is discreet, organic, and deeply human and started being welcomed at the hotel until departing with tiniest beautiful hand bouquet and friendly smiles.

The spa at Quinta da Casa Branca is a serene hideaway designed for deep rest, renewal, and reflection. Tucked away within the gardens, it offers a holistic approach to well-being—discreet, elegant, and in harmony with the hotel’s quiet philosophy of luxury. Small in scale but rich in atmosphere, the spa is intentionally intimate, creating a sense of sanctuary from the moment you step inside. I have had the most beautiful treatment at this spa, which I consider to be one of the best I experienced in a long time. The therapist was experienced and knowledgeable.

Manor House Suites

Set within the original 19th-century house, these are the most atmospheric rooms with high ceilings, antique furniture, and a feeling of quiet grandeur. How lovely to be welcomed, upon arrival, by a thoughtful welcome note and fresh flowers and not to forget the chocolates!

Staying in the Manor House with its historic Grandeur, is an experience to remember. It houses just a few exclusive suites, ensuring absolute privacy. It is a step into another era – an experience of elegant seclusion, timeless atmosphere, and refined charm, with all the comforts of modern luxury discreetly woven in.

I loved the high ceilings and garden views. Lots of personal touches and really super comfortable, quiet luxury. Quinta Casa Branca is a distinguished member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) – an exclusive collection of the world’s finest independently owned boutique hotels.
