Palácio Estoril Hotel, Golf & Wellness

Palácio Estoril Hotel & Spa resembles Old-World Glamour: Built in 1930, it retains a Belle Époque charm with chandeliers, polished wood, and grand staircases. It feels like stepping into a refined, historic era. By far one of my favorite hotels. The Palácio Estoril Hotel is often described as having a classic, elegant, and timeless atmosphere.

It’s all about discreet luxury: Unlike flashy modern hotels, its luxury is subtle—think marble floors, plush carpets, and quiet sophistication. Add to that the Historic Prestige: It has hosted royalty, aristocrats, and even spies during WWII (featured in James Bond lore). This gives it a mysterious and aristocratic vibe. Opened in 1930, in the seaside town of Estoril, Portugal, the hotel was built to attract wealthy travelers, aristocrats, and royalty seeking leisure on the Portuguese Riviera. After the war, the Palácio Estoril continued to attract heads of state, celebrities, and aristocrats. The hotel became a symbol of Portugal’s discreet elegance and cosmopolitan culture. Featured in the 1969 James Bond film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”—the hotel appears in several scenes. Its association with espionage and luxury solidified its legendary status. It quickly became a social hub for European high society, offering luxury, elegance, and privacy.

Calm & Exclusive: Located in Estoril, a heartbeat  from the Lisbon bustle, it has a serene, private atmosphere with lush gardens and views of the Atlantic with an amazing pool. The swimming pool at Palácio Estoril is one of its signature features and reflects the same classic elegance as the hotel. Here’s what makes it special: a fabulous, large, saltwater pool set in the hotel’s private gardens in front of the hotel.

Historic Charm: The pool area has kept its traditional style—think elegant tiles, white parasols, and timeless sophistication, rather than flashy modern design.

The Banyan Tree Spa Estoril at Palácio Estoril is a sanctuary of Asian-inspired wellness, seamlessly blending tranquility with the hotel’s historic elegance.

The Grill Four Seasons Restaurant at Palácio Estoril Hotel is one of the most elegant dining experiences in Portugal, blending heritage, sophistication, and gastronomy. Timeless décor: Dark polished wood, soft lighting, and refined table settings create an intimate, classic ambient. A harmonious mix of Portuguese and international fine dining, with menus evolving seasonally. At Palácio Estoril’s Grill Four Seasons Restaurant, the Crêpe Suzette prepared at the table is one of its most iconic culinary experiences—a true nod to the golden age of classic European fine dining: needless to say I always look forward to this experience when dining at this special restaurant.

Since the moment the skilled waiter brings a gueridon trolley to my table I feel the excitement to experience this multi-sensory delight: The aroma of citrus, the flicker of flames, and the rich flavor of liqueur-soaked crêpes. A timeless ritual of elegance and indulgence, evoking the glamour of a bygone era where dining was an art form—not just a meal. Cinematic charm was only to be experienced at Palacio Estoril: vintage charm.

The Bar Estoril at Palácio Estoril Hotel is one of the most legendary spots on the Portuguese Riviera, famous for its heritage, elegance, and cinematic atmosphere, where I have spent hours over the past years. It feels like a classic European gentleman’s club with a cosmopolitan twist.

Historic aura: This was the discreet meeting point for royalty, aristocrats, spies, and exiles during WWII. The James Bond connection: Ian Fleming spent time here during his naval intelligence years, inspiring Casino Royal.

The famed corridor at Palácio Estoril Hotel is one of the property’s most distinctive and atmospheric features, a living gallery of history and glamour, this long, elegant hallway connecting key areas of the hotel with walls adorned with black-and-white photographs of royalty, film stars, statesmen, and personalities who have stayed at the hotel. It’s a visual chronicle of Palácio Estoril’s legacy, spanning almost a century.

I cannot conclude this article without mentioning the housekeeping: At Palácio Estoril Hotel, the housekeeping reflects its heritage of classic luxury and old-world service standards, discretion, and professionalism. Refined service that I have difficulty finding elsewhere and always have loved it in my many years visiting this hotel. This hotel is for sure one of the iconic landmarks of the Lisbon area and Portugal.
