Olissippo Lapa Palace Hotel – From noble family home to Lisbon’s serene sanctuary

Built in 1870 as a private palace for the Count of Valenças, one of Lisbon’s noble families and with a fantastic location in Lapa district, an embassy and aristocracy neighborhood of Lisbon —quiet, elevated, and overlooking the Tagus River. Featuring hand-painted frescos on ceilings, intricate stucco and woodwork. From its inception, the palace had lush subtropical garden, rare for central Lisbon.

After being a noble residence for decades, the palace was converted into a hotel in 1992, with careful restoration to preserve its original charm. The Palace Wing retains the historical architecture and antique décor, while newer wings were added discreetly to blend with the original style. Staying here isn’t just about luxury, it’s about living inside Lisbon’s aristocratic heritage.

On arrival we were greeted by the doorman, making you feel welcome and special. From the high ceilings of the beautiful reception area, with fabulous flowers as a centre piece, we were escorted to our room in the palace wing. Walking into one if the palace wing rooms is like stepping into a romantic novel: my absolute favorite. Every room in the Palace wing is different and everyone makes you sigh with wonder.

The decor reflects 19th-century Portuguese nobility, with influences from Italian romanticism and French classical design. It’s not themed luxury, it’s authentic heritage, preserved and restored with care. Many rooms have hand-painted ceilings or stucco cornices, some with floral or neoclassical motifs.

I love the soft pastels or warm cream with which the walls are painted with wainscoting and ornate trim, some rooms include historic frescoes, delicate and faded in the most beautiful way. The heavy flowing curtains and drapes in rich textiles frame the room in a stunning way. Fabulous bedding: plush, white linens often paired with a patterned bedspread or canopy. Crystal chandeliers, romantics pastels: do I need to say more? It creates a space that feels timeless, personal, and unmistakably European.

The bar at Lapa Palace — officially known as the Rio Tejo Bar — is a hidden gem, and one of the most refined, intimate, and atmospheric bars in Lisbon. It’s not just a place for drinks, it’s a space that carries the same aristocratic elegance as the rest of the palace, but with a quiet, after-dark charm.

The gardens and pool at Lapa Palace are the soul of the property. Together, they create a tranquil, romantic oasis rarely found in any European city, especially one as vibrant and vertical as Lisbon.

Dining at Lapa Palace is a refined, romantic experience that matches the grandeur of the hotel’s setting. Whether you’re having breakfast under lemon trees, a formal dinner in a chandelier-lit salon, or a light lunch by the pool, every meal is steeped in elegance and rooted in Portuguese tradition with international flair.

When the time comes to  depart you realize you’re not just leaving a hotel, you’re saying goodbye to a hidden sanctuary, a place where time slowed and the world outside seemed far away. When  departing we felt like we will look forward to return — a vow to come back someday, to slip once again into this timeless world where romance, calm, and history mingle effortlessly.
