The story of Leopard’s Lair Bush Lodge is one of vision, passion, and a deep-rooted love for Africa’s wild places. It began as a dream—held by its owners, Anton Lategan and his lovely wife Simeone. Built on a piece of land in the Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate that borders the untamed beauty of the Greater Kruger, the lodge boasts an excellent location on a dry river bed.
The name “Leopard’s Lair” speaks to both mystery and elegance—echoing the elusive beauty of the leopard, an animal that embodies quiet power and grace. From its opening, the lodge has steadily built a reputation not just for luxury, but for soul—drawing travelers seeking meaningful encounters and personalized experiences.

From the lodge, it’s just minutes to the vibrant town of Hoedspruit—home to local markets, art galleries, and cafés—yet the setting feels worlds away, surrounded by open bushfield. More than often I was so delightfully surprised by giraffes in the driveway or a beautiful kudu bull will appearing from nowhere. Not to mention the excitement when I heard the leopard at night as well as the hyenas.
This is more than a convenient base—it’s a doorway to authentic safari experiences, with nearby game reserves, conservation centers, and the Blyde River Canyon all within easy reach. The location makes every moment feel like a seamless blend of comfort, culture, and wild African soul. Leopard’s Lair Bush Lodge offers guests an unforgettable safari experience with game drives conducted in Pridelands Conservancy, a private Big Five reserve that forms part of the Greater Kruger National Park.
Pridelands is a conservation success story—once a fenced farmland, it was restored and opened to wildlife in recent years. Today, it’s unfenced and fully integrated into Kruger’s vast ecosystem, allowing animals to roam freely across thousands of hectares of protected wilderness. The terrain is wild and varied—open plains, mopane woodlands, rocky outcrops, and natural waterholes—making every drive dynamic and unpredictable.
Because Pridelands is private, the drives are exclusive and unhurried—no crowds, no strict routes, and this is unique and amazing, just intimate, off-road encounters led by passionate guides who share the deeper stories of the land and its wildlife. Leopard’s Lair Bush Lodge conducts its game drives in the nearby Big Five game reserves surrounding Hoedspruit, most notably within the Greater Kruger region, including Balule Nature Reserve and Klaserie Private Nature Reserve. These reserves are unfenced from Kruger National Park, allowing wildlife to roam freely—offering guests an authentic, uncrowded safari experience.
We were picked up from the lodge and driven to Pridelands in an open 4×4 vehicle, guided by an experienced tracker and guides who know the terrain intimately. Drives typically happen in the early morning and late afternoon—when animals are most active—and include chances to spot lion, elephant, rhino, leopard, buffalo, and more, along with birds and smaller creatures. Highlight of the gamedrive is the sunset cocktail beautifully presented and a good time to ask question to guides. Arriving back at the lodge after the game drives allows one to return to the comfort and calm of the lodge between safaris—enjoying the best of both wild adventure and tranquility of the lodge.
