More than just a restaurant, India Gate is a sensory journey to the heart of India, where every dish tells a story, every spice reveals a tradition, and every meal celebrates a culture that spans thousands of years.
In an increasingly cosmopolitan Lisbon, this restaurant continues to establish itself as one of the city’s most authentic ambassadors of Indian cuisine. Founded in 2005 by Hemant and Anita Devani, India Gate was born from a desire to share family recipes, childhood flavours and a culinary heritage passed down from generation to generation. That authenticity remains intact and is evident from the very moment you take your seat at the table.
It was here in Lisbon, just a few steps from the Tagus River, that we embarked on an à la carte dining experience designed to showcase the extraordinary diversity of Indian cuisine. Simply referring to it as “Indian food” overlooks the richness of a country where each region has its own distinct culinary identity, shaped by geography, history and culture.
The journey naturally begins with the restaurant’s iconic samosas. Far more than a starter, they have become one of India Gate’s signature dishes. Prepared according to a secret Devani family recipe inherited from the founders’ father, they stand out for their light, delicate pastry, impeccable texture and the perfectly balanced blend of spices that awaken the palate without ever overwhelming it.
As the dishes arrive at the table, it becomes clear that the spices here are not intended to impress through heat alone, but are used with precision to create depth, elegance and balance.
Among the dishes we sampled, the delicate Prawn Curry, inspired by the cuisine of Goa, was a particular highlight. Reflecting the region’s Portuguese heritage, it offers vibrant, aromatic and subtly exotic flavours in a dish that is fresh, elegant and full of character.

In contrast, the Lamb Curry transports diners to Punjab, in northern India, through a rich, intense and comforting sauce where warming spices slowly melt into the tender texture of the meat, creating a truly memorable experience. As tradition dictates, it is best accompanied by an irresistible Garlic Naan and rounded off with one of the finest Bebinkas I have ever tasted.
Each dish reveals a different region, a different tradition and a new way of interpreting seemingly familiar ingredients. It is this ability to take diners on a journey without ever leaving the table that sets India Gate apart and explains why it continues to win over guests after so many years.
The setting reflects the elegance of the dining experience itself. Accommodating around 70 guests indoors, alongside a charming outdoor terrace particularly inviting on warm summer evenings, the restaurant offers an atmosphere that is welcoming, sophisticated and relaxed, making it equally suited to a romantic dinner, an evening with friends or a special celebration. India Gate also caters for private and corporate events, welcoming groups looking for a distinctive gastronomic experience in an intimate setting.
At a time when so many restaurants are constantly reinventing themselves, India Gate remains true to its roots. Perhaps that unwavering authenticity is precisely what has made it one of Lisbon’s most respected destinations for Indian cuisine. Because when a meal succeeds in telling the story of a family, a culture and an entire country, it becomes far more than dinner—it becomes a genuine journey, defined by authenticity, hospitality and a table where India is served with soul.
