Casa Palmela: between the mountains and time

In the heart of Portugal, within the Arrábida Natural Park, between rolling green hills and the blue sky that merges with the distant Atlantic, stands Casa Palmela, an elegant retreat that preserves, within its centuries-old walls, the memories of a noble past and a new life dedicated to well-being and authenticity. This is a 17th-century manor house, once belonging to the Portuguese aristocracy, that has witnessed generations deeply connected to the land, wine, and nature. Today, transformed into a five-star boutique hotel and part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, it retains the spirit of the past in its wooden floors, stone vaults, and expansive gardens, while offering the comfort and sophistication of a contemporary stay.

We arrived in the late afternoon, as the mountain breeze carried the scent of Mediterranean vegetation and a comforting silence, gently interrupted only by the sounds of nature. Settled into one of the suites overlooking the hills, it was effortless to slip into the calm rhythm of this place. Guests may choose between rooms in the Manor House or the Garden House, or opt for the Country Houses – fully equipped with kitchen, dining room, terrace, and private pool – ideal for families seeking comfort, privacy, and the freedom of a longer, independent stay.

Zimbral – Gastronomy with Identity

The hotel’s Zimbral restaurant reveals itself as a natural extension of the sensory experience provided by the surrounding landscape. At dinner, we were surprised by a menu that celebrates local and seasonal produce, reinventing traditional recipes with sophistication. The chef quite literally visits the hotel’s organic garden to pick aromatic herbs and various ingredients, and this freshness can truly be tasted on the plate. It is the very best of Portuguese gastronomy, carefully paired with national wines.

In the morning, after breakfast with a beautiful view over the mountains and accompanied by the sound of birdsong, we ventured into an activity that allowed us to experience local tradition through a Tile Painting Workshop at the São Simão Arte studio in Vila Fresca de Azeitão. Guided by a local artisan, we learned about the historical traces of Portuguese patterns and, brush in hand, created our own tile. More than a material souvenir, we took with us the pleasure of a creative, meditative experience deeply rooted in local culture.

More than a stay, an inner journey

Casa Palmela’s privileged location — less than an hour away from Lisbon — allows guests to explore the Arrábida Mountains, walk through the vineyards, go horseback riding, or simply enjoy the swimming pool and gardens. A brief Sunday morning walk beneath the treetops can do wonders for one’s sense of rest and wellbeing.

We left with the certainty that, at Casa Palmela, time seems to follow a different logic — more human, more sensitive, and closer to nature and the simple beauty of things done well. Between history, gastronomy, and art, this is a destination where every detail matters. And one that is always worth returning to.
