Staying at BHB Boutique House is much more than just spending the night in Macedo de Cavaleiros, in the Trás-os-Montes region: it’s about combining the sophistication of a boutique hotel with an immersion into the essence of Trás-os-Montes and discovering a fascinating part of Portugal. An abundance of culture, authenticity, and genuine hospitality.
Gonçalo, João, Paula, and Acácio Espírito Santo are a family passionate about their homeland, and it was in one of Macedo de Cavaleiros’ most iconic buildings that they decided to create the BHB (Bespoke Home Balm) project, a boutique hotel of art and design that pays tribute to the culture, heritage, and nature of northeastern Trás-os-Montes.
Macedo de Cavaleiros is a land of contrasts, where the cultural identity of the Caretos de Podence echoes through the streets and lives on in every gesture and every story told by the locals. This was also the theme of our stay, in the spacious Caretos Suite, decorated entirely in shades of red, where tradition comes to life through details that celebrate one of the region’s greatest cultural expressions. Colorful symbols, vibrant masks, and the contagious energy of this mythical figure of Trás-os-Montes remind us that here, culture is lived every day. The boutique concept runs through this entire family home. In total, there are just five accommodations (two deluxe rooms and three junior suites), each with its own theme and atmosphere, yet all offering the same comfort and elegance. Spread across three floors, they ensure an immediate connection to the culture of the territory.
After a restful night’s sleep, the day begins with a generous and varied breakfast, able to please those who seek traditional flavors as well as those who prefer lighter options. The table reflects the hospitality of Trás-os-Montes: simple, authentic, and abundant with local products — fresh fruit, homemade jams, toast with honey and walnuts, granola, traditional sausages, and a homemade chocolate cake, a Mozambican recipe from the owner’s grandmother — truly delicious!

To complete the experience, we ventured to Azibo for a Sunset Cruise, where nature reveals its most serene side in total harmony. On a boat trip organized by https://sunazibo.com, we sailed along the reservoir and let ourselves be carried away by the tranquility of the crystal-clear waters, framed by lush landscapes seemingly untouched by time. The silence was broken only by the sound of the water against the hull and the smiles of those sharing the journey. Along the way, we observed the rich biodiversity, geological formations, and surrounding cultural heritage, spotted local birdlife, and even enjoyed regional products served on board as a snack. An experience that conveys immense peace and a deep connection with the beauty of the landscape — a wonderful reminder that happiness is often found in the simplest moments.
Between the comfort of BHB, the cultural richness of the Caretos, the heartwarming gastronomy, and the natural beauty of Azibo, Macedo de Cavaleiros revealed itself as a destination that holds everything Trás-os-Montes has most authentic: tradition, hospitality, and unforgettable experiences.
