The Sultanate of Oman is the oldest independent Arab state in the world and is a fascinating country that often goes unnoticed by travelers but is an authentic jewel located on the Arabian Peninsula. It is a destination that surprises with its rich history (which includes the Portuguese fortresses of Al Jalali and Al Marini), stunning landscapes and a warm and welcoming culture. From pristine beaches to rugged mountains, vast deserts and vibrant cities, Oman offers a diversity of experiences that enchanted us from the first moment.
Oman has a history that dates back thousands of years, with traces of ancient civilizations that inhabited the region. It was in Muscat, the capital, that the largest base of the Portuguese army in the Middle East remained for years, conquered by Afonso de Albuquerque in 1507. Here he ordered the construction of the fortresses of Al Jalali and Al Marini, the most important work of military engineering of the 16th century. We visited the double fortification that occupies both sides of Muscat Bay, considered the most important building in Oman.
Muscat is a fascinating mix of tradition and modernity whose great symbol, the Sultan Qaboos Mosque, is an impressive example of contemporary Islamic architecture and is undoubtedly a highlight of the city, a must-visit and therefore our first stop. Inside the mosque, a feeling of peace reigns, especially the giant prayer rug, of Persian origin, that covers the floor of the room. It took four years to complete and was produced in Iran. Meanwhile, the National Museum of Oman offers a comprehensive overview of the country’s cultural heritage, with exhibits ranging from ancient artefacts to displays of traditional Omani life. Also worth a visit is the Muscat Opera House, the beautiful Al Alam Palace, a walk along the waterfront or the local fish market.
Whenever possible, I don’t forget to visit the traditional souks and in Muscat, the Mutrah Souq is a must-see and the ideal place to immerse ourselves in the local culture. Here you can find everything from aromatic spices and incense to traditional crafts and jewelry. Participating in an Omani coffee, served with dates, is a delicious experience to experience local hospitality.
Oman’s natural landscape and diverse geography invite adventure. The Al Hajar Mountains, which stretch across the north of the country, are ideal for hiking and climbing, with panoramic views of deep valleys and picturesque villages. Jebel Shams, the highest mountain in Oman, is known as the “Grand Canyon of the Middle East” due to its impressive rock formations. But it is the undulating dunes of the Wahiba Sands desert, mysterious and infinite, that provide an unforgettable camping experience under a starry sky and where from time to time you can see the famous oases, or wadis, such as Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid, with natural pools, authentic monuments where we feel that the perfection of nature is magnanimous.
Beach and sea lovers will find the coast of Oman, bathed by the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, a paradise with delicate sands and warm waters. If there is time, enjoy the island of Masirah and the Musandam peninsula, especially famous for their crystal clear waters and vibrant marine life where there is no shortage of corals, tropical fish and even sea turtles.
There’s nothing like gastronomy to get to know the culture and traditions of a country in greater depth, which are often learned at the table. Oman’s cuisine reflects its strategic position on ancient trade routes, combining Arab, African and Indian influences. Dishes such as Shuwa, marinated and slow-roasted lamb meat, and Majboos, a rice dish seasoned with meat or fish, are examples of the rich palette of flavors that we had the pleasure of tasting during our visit.
We left with a full soul and with the clear feeling that this was the first of many visits because there was so much left to visit and explore with new eyes. This trip to Oman was embarking on a journey through a country of captivating contrasts and unexplored beauty. Whether for its natural wonders, vibrant culture or the warm hospitality of its people, Oman has given us an unforgettable experience that we will remember.
