Pamukkale is one of the most impressive sites I have been to in Turkey. Its name actually means “cotton castle” in Turkish and that is exactly the first impression we have. It is a stunning natural site famous for its white terraces of travertine, a mineral deposit left by flowing water. We have the impression that this is where heaven meets earth. A tapestry of wonders and a realm of rebirth where ancient whispers echo through stone.
One of the best experiences is to take a walk on the Travertines, the terraces of Pamukkale, where the white travertine formations create a breathtaking landscape. We must remove our shoes to protect the natural formations and respect the environment. Upon cotton cliffs the crystalline waters gently flow and each terrace tells a story of ethereal grace in a sanctuary of serenity.
Relaxing in the thermal pools is incredible. Pamukkale’s terraces are filled with thermal pools where you can soak and relax in the mineral-rich waters, which are said to have healing properties. The running water under your feet feels like an open air spa! A symphony of nature, a masterpiece at heart.
While we were there we went to visit Hierapolis, an archaeological and ancient city adjacent to Pamukkale. Highlights include the Hierapolis Theatre, the Necropolis and the Antique Pool. Secrets of centuries laid in silence, eternity’s art. Afterwards we visited the museum to learn more about the history and artifacts of Hierapolis and the surrounding region, it’s fascinating.
Pamukkale is most beautiful in the early morning or late afternoon when the light is soft and the crowds are smaller so we enjoyed a lovely sunset where sun-kissed hues paint the horizon’s sweep. A trip to Pamukkale promises a unique blend of natural beauty, history and relaxation so we wander, in wonder and awe, through Pamukkale’s realms, where spirits draw.
