It is always a pleasure to return to the seductive city of Porto. This time we went to the GA Palace, a new hotel in the city center, which gave new life to a building from the beginning of the 20th century, a property that belonged to the same family for three generations. Elegant art decor, good Italian cuisine and a charming spa characterize this city oasis.
It is a palace that stands out for its beauty but inside the atmosphere is welcoming and being a boutique hotel we have the feeling that we are at home. A space that excels in good taste and professionalism. An excellent combination of classic and modern, a touch that always fascinates me. The Name GA Palace Hotel combines the initials of the two investors: Genaro Balzano and António Tramontano, with whom I spoke and explained the concept of this great work, having recognized the full potential of the city and in particular this once-ruined palace.
This new five-star hotel enjoys a privileged location in the Batalha area, being within walking distance of some of the city’s most famous monuments, so we took the opportunity to calmly walk along the traditional limestone and granite streets and set out to discover. And after a day of sightseeing, there’s nothing like arriving at our room and resting in a sea of comfort.
The rooms are divided into several categories, with garden or city views, equipped with all the amenities we need, including a writing kit, a coffee machine and a tea kit, perfect to complement our stay. The end of the afternoon takes place in the heated water pool, divided between the outside and the hotel’s spa. It is at this time that champagne is served to all guests and we take the opportunity to relax as much as possible and enjoy these little treats that elevate the moment. Outside, the gardens exude the scent of some flowers, surrounded by imposing Mediterranean palm trees and Italian cypresses and suddenly, it seems like we are in Italy and you can feel the dedication and love with which they are cared for.
The flavors are in charge of the Acqua Restaurant, a space dedicated to Italian and Portuguese cuisine where authentic flavors and high quality ingredients shine. The atmosphere is relaxed and resembles a traditional Italian osteria that focuses on good times at the table and sharing traditional dishes. The mastery comes from Portuguese chef Vitor Santos and Italian chef Matteo Rodolico – both renowned in international restaurants with Michelin stars. The menu offers the best of both worlds, the traditional Italian recipe with dishes from “cozinha da la nonna” and genuine Portuguese flavors including cod or a tribute dish to Bairrada suckling pig. At our disposal we have a tempting selection of dishes and snacks served throughout the day and to be enjoyed in the restaurant, on the garden terrace or by the pool. Highlights include the Seafood Tartar or Tuna Tataki, as well as the famous Farmhouse Burger, the Caprese Salad and the delicious desserts.
The GA Palace is a work of good taste where everything was chosen with particular attention and detail. A tribute to two countries and a house that vibrates with comfort and a youthfulness that cannot be explained, it just has life. A “Dolce Vita” that pleases and makes you want to come back for future visits.
